Best practice for moving installation

Postby virgild » Mon Mar 14th, 2016 4:32pm

Mailtraq Version: 2.18.341.3590
What is the best practice for moving the installation to a new machine?
Thank you.

Not best-practice but the last rebuild went something like this:

new
  • check bios options; power-up, etc
  • install: Win10
  • uninstall just about everything uninstallable
  • ponder choice of OS
  • maximise privacy; disable anything helpful
  • add Windows Defender exclusions for MailtraqService.exe & database/*
  • install 7-Zip, notepad++ & SimpleDNS+
  • install perl (copy Format.pm to C:\Perl64\lib\Time\ for Jim's log-analysis)
  • install a-v;
    • clamav & freshclam (netfarm version for Win services)
    • SaneSig 'safe' definitions with Scheduled Task for updates
  • reboot & check Event Log for errors & warnings

old
  • shutdown Mailtraq
  • full backup
  • copy database\*
  • copy logs
  • copy Mailtraq registry key (for Debugflags, etc)

new
  • copy in Mtq registry key (adjust key for 32/64 bit if necessary)
  • copy in database\* and logs
  • new paths (database, online backup, logs, etc)? Search/replace system.cfg
  • new ip address? Check lan definition, service properties, dns, ...
  • update perl and test all scripts
  • install Mailtraq (same build)
  • manual tests; online backup, a-v, ...
  • turn phone off
  • reboot
  • go on holiday

Thank you. Love the part about going on holiday...

P.S. Do I need to uninstall Mailtraq from the old machine prior to installing it on the new machine due to licensing?

That's the easy bit but I'm still recovering from how good the last one was.

I can't answer that question definitively. Hypothetical people (in London, N1) might set up a non-production instance for test purposes. Morally that's fine with me but legally, I've no idea.

When in doubt contact the elephant in the room. ;)
