Will VSS be supported in the future?

Postby Rogier » Fri Feb 14th, 2014 6:46am

Will there be any support for VSS in the near future?
And/or other updates in backup solutions?

Tnx

This depends on our Database vendor and as I understand it VSS is not supported and support isn't anticipated. I've asked and it seems that VSS it not well suited to databases. We do intend to support other databases in the future and VSS will definitely be a topic for investigation.

Maybe VSS isn't the best solution, but then I would be interested in a better way to backup the database.

our database is about 200Gb and takes an awful long time to backup. strategies I tried:

online backup:
pro: mailserver stays online
con: not incremental and takes about 9 hours :(

stop server and copy database
con: mailserver offline for 3 hours, not incremental so large diskspace needs

stop server, backup with microsoft server backup
pro: takes about 1 hour / incremental
con: mailserver still offline

So a way to make a snapshot while the server is running (Isn't that where VSS is designed for?) would be nice.

tnx for your reply

If your Mailtraq server is running in a virtual environment (i.e. VMWare), there are some backup options you may want to look into to accomplish this.
