POP3 collection

Postby virgiox » Fri Jan 24th, 2014 8:08am

Mailtraq Version: 2.17.5.3364

Some users complain about receiving messages quite late. While Remote POP3 collection is set to check messages every 3 minutes, it actually happens that there's a lot of jitter. It could take much more than 3 minutes to make new POP3 collection. Please find below some lines filtered by notepad++, searching for "diretta@voispeed.com" :

While the "Connecting to..." are quite regular every 3 minutes, the "APOP" messages are logged only 2 times in 40 minutes. Is it a correct behaviour or should we check something else ?

Thanks for your support.

Is it possible that the server is throttling the client? To be honest a check every 3 minutes is too often for most providers. Most providers expect that POP3 accounts will be checked no more than once every 15 minutes. If you need more timely mail then you really have to consider direct SMTP delivery. Is that an option?

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately the SMTP delivery is not an option. About the throttling, I set a POP3 collection every 15 minutes, just to check any improvement.
What should we see in our log, when everything goes as expected ? One "Connecting to..." followed by one "APOP..." ?

Yes that's correct.

I'm curious as to why SMTP is not an option. Is this because you share the domain with another organisation?
